Between 1770 and 1815, the population of the territories of the Holy Roman Empire on the left bank of the Rhine was confronted with successive upheavals. The study explores the perceptions and responses to these upheavals by the Catholic elites of the Archbishopric of Trier. It focuses on discourses within the religious world of Catholicism during the turbulent period between the Enlightenment and French rule.
