Neo-orthodox narrative literature lends insight into the complex processes of self-presentation by orthodox Judaism in the second half of the 19 th century, which included a restructuring of gender relations, along with strategies for maintaining order and demarcating boundaries. Feuilleton literature served as an entertainment medium as well as an aesthetic vehicle for transmitting religious and sociocultural knowledge.
