In the 19 th century, protectorates and similar forms of imperial rule created asymmetrical power structures, in which sovereign states became the playthings of their protector. Yet the status of protectorate guaranteed more autonomy than a colonial status and became a separate category in international law. The study examines how why these forms of rule came into being and their impact on notions of sovereignty.

Protektorate und ähnlichen Formen imperialer Herrschaft schufen im 19. Jh. asymmetrische Machtstrukturen, in denen formal souveräne Staaten zum Spielball ihres Protektors wurden. Zugleich garantierte der Protektoratsstatus mehr Autonomie als in Kolonien und auch im Völkerrecht wurden sie zur eigenen Herrschaftskategorie.
