On Common Ground presents a history of spatial development in postwar Switzerland through 250 images. The authors draw on a vast collection of photographs found in archives of all sorts: local government offices, building companies, local and national newspapers, publishers of postcards, cultural heritage societies, and amateur photographers. This carefully assembled volume looks specifically at the town of Schlieren, today a suburb of Zurich, and Upper Engadine, the world-famous mountain resort around St. Moritz in the Canton of Grisons.

Tracing the rise of the suburb, On Common Ground arranges images of each location in more or less chronological sequencethe top of each page shows Schlieren, while Upper Engadine is shown on the bottom, allowing for an easy visual comparison between the two regions. This unique study offers a novel way to understand the urban transformation of Switzerland since World War II, and by extension the modern rise of suburbs in central Europe. Essays contextualize the photographs within Swiss history and socioeconomic developments during the second half of the twentieth century.

Ulrich Gorlich, born 1952 in Germany, has been working with photography as an artistic medium since 1977. He has been teaching as a professor at the Zurich University for the Arts (ZHdK) and its preceding institution, School of Art and Design Zurich(hgkz), since 1990. Meret Wandeler, born in Zurich in 1967, was educated in photography at the former School of Art and Design Zurich (hgkz, now Zurich University for the Arts ZHdK) and the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1990 - 95. She works on artistic research projects on photography and spatial development in Zurich. Wandeler also realises actions as a performance artist and other artistic projects as a freelance photographer. Christian Schmid, born 1958 in Zurich, read geography and sociology at the University of Zurich. He has been teaching as a lecturer at the Department of Architecture of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) since 2001 and at ETH Studio Basel since 2007. He has been a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich since 2009.

'Auf Gemeindegebiet' ist eine visuelle Geschichte der Raum- und Siedlungsentwicklung in der Schweiz seit 1945. Es zeigt anhand von 230 Fotografien mit ergänzenden Essays zwei Beispiele: Schlieren - eine typische Zürcher Vorortsgemeinde, die sich vom Bauerndorf zur Industriestadt entwickelte - und das Oberengadin um St.Moritz, die weltbekannte Tourismusdestination in den Bündner Alpen. Das Buch schöpft aus einem Bildbestand, der zuvor noch nie erforscht wurde: 4000 Gebrauchsfotografien aus den Archiven von Baufirmen, Gemeindeämtern, Amateurfotografen, Postkartenverlagen, Lokalzeitungen und Kulturarchiven, die die Autoren in einem Forschungsprojekt der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdK (Institut für Gegenwartskunste IFCAR) systematisch gesichtet haben. Für diesen Band haben sie zwei Bildstrecken zusammengestellt, die sich chronologisch durch das Buch ziehen: stets in der oberen Seitenhälfte ein Bild von Schlieren und in der unteren eines aus dem Oberengadin. Das Konzept enthüllt vielfältige Bezüge, Diskrepanzen und Parallelen zwischen den beiden Gebieten. So macht es den Verlauf der Zeit sichtbar und zeigt, wie die räumliche Entwicklung manchmal synchron, manchmal aber auch ganz unterschiedlich verlaufen ist. Und offenbart damit, wie sehr sich beide Gegenden verändert haben. Ein Essay analysiert den Urbanisierungsprozess in der Schweiz seit 1945.
