In eighteen studies by renowned scholars, this volume addresses Quintilian's Institutio oratoria from various disciplinary perspectives. Based on Quintilian's claim that the orator must possess comprehensive erudition, it examines the relationship between rhetoric and other fields of knowledge. The contributions cover the rhetorical theory from disposition and argumentation to stylistics and delivery of speech, and are divided into six sections: architecture; law and philosophy; fine arts and literary criticism; mathematics, music and cookery; seafaring and agriculture; sport, medicine and drama. The volume thus contributes to a better understanding of rhetorical concepts, the notion of discipline in Graeco-Roman antiquity, and knowledge in imperial Rome. At the same time, it offers fresh insights into the impact and relevance of Quintilian's Institutio oratoria .

Der Band versammelt 18 Beiträge renommierter Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die Quintilians Institutio oratoria aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären Perspektiven in den Blick nehmen. Ausgehend von Quintilians Forderung nach umfassender Bildung für den Redner wird untersucht, wie er das Verhältnis der Rhetorik zu anderen Fächern bestimmt. Die Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit der rhetorischen Theorie von der Redeanlage über die Argumentationslehre und Stilistik bis hin zum Auftritt und sind in sechs disziplinäre Abschnitte gegliedert: "Bauformen und Architektur der Rede", "Recht und Philosophie", "Bildende Kunst und Literaturkritik", "Mathematik, Musik und Kulinarik", "Seefahrt und Landwirtschaft" sowie "Sport, Medizin und Schauspiel". Damit leistet der Band einen Beitrag zum Verständnis rhetorischer Konzepte, zum Disziplinbegriff der griechisch-römischen Antike und zum Wissensdiskurs der Kaiserzeit. In der Gesamtschau wird zugleich die enorme Wirkungsgeschichte und Aktualität von Quintilians Institutio oratoria plausibel.
