The enforcement of international law provides a relatively new alternative for the world community to bring about improvements in the human rights situation in autocracies. This study investigates the deterrent effects of such law. It finds that the deterrence associated with increasing the accountability of autocratic political leaders varies in relation to the specific type of regime.
