Although Antiquity itself has been intensively researched, together with its reception, to date this has largely happened in a compartmentalized fashion. This series presents for the first time an interdisciplinary contextualization of the productive acquisitions and transformations of the arts and sciences of Antiquity in the slow process of the European societies constructing a scientific system and their own cultural identity, a process which started in the Middle Ages and has continued up to the Modern Age. The series is a product of work in the Collaborative Research Centre Transformations of Antiquity and the August Boeckh Centre of Antiquity at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Für die Entstehung und Entwicklung des deutschen Nationalbewusstseins spielte die Germania des Tacitus eine ganz entscheidende Rolle. Zahlreiche Studien haben bereits wichtige Phasen und Formen ihrer Rezeption untersucht. Weitestgehend unberücksichtigt geblieben ist dabei allerdings die sich seit Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts entwickelnde humanistische Kommentarliteratur zur Germania. Diese Kommentare repräsentieren nicht nur eine der zentralen Praktiken humanistischer Gelehrsamkeit, da sie den antiken Text sprachlich, inhaltlich und konzeptionell durchdringen, sondern verstehen sich auch als wichtiger Beitrag zum nationalen Geschichtsdiskurs. Das vorliegende Buch beabsichtigt, diese Forschungslücke zur Rezeption der Germania ein Stück weit zu schließen und zugleich einen Beitrag zur Erforschung humanistischer Kommentare als Transformationsmedien und -strategien zu leisten. Gegenstand sind die vier ersten gedruckten Germania-Kommentare, die Beatus Rhenanus (1519), Andreas Althamer (1529 und 1536) und Philipp Melanchthon (1538) verfasst haben. Im Fokus der Untersuchung steht dabei die Frage nach dem jeweiligen Antikebild, seiner narrativen Ausgestaltung und seinem Verhältnis zum zeitgenössischen Geschichtsdiskurs.
