This second Series A volume of Werner Heisenberg's Collected Works covers a period of about 15 years beginning with the early papers on quantum field theory in 1929/30 and ending with those on the scattering matrix (up to 1946). The reader will find Heisenberg contributions to Dirac's theory of the electron, to nuclear physics, to cosmic ray phenomena, and to reactor physics. The papers on the Uranium Project, classified for a long time and never fully published before, will certainly attract a wide audience. As in the first volume, each group of papers is furnished with an introduction in English by an eminent scientist. The contributing scientists are: R. Haag, A. Pais, C.F. von Weizsäcker, E. Bagge, K. Wirtz, and R. Oehme.

Abraham Pais gehört zu den international führenden Quantenfeldtheoretikern und Einstein-Biographen unserer Zeit. "Für Physiker war Pais der 'Mister Quantenfeldtheorie'. Für Albert Einstein war er ein Kollege und Freund am Institute for Advanced Studies (in Princeton) ...." (Physics Today) Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, geb. am 26. Juni 1912 in Kiel, war Professor für Physik in Straßburg und Göttingen, arbeitete am Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut in Berlin sowie am Max-Planck-Institut in Göttingen und wurde dann Professor für Philosophie in Hamburg. 1957 organisierte er die 'Erklärung der Göttinger Achtzehn', den Protest deutscher Wissenschaftler gegen die Bewaffnung der Bundeswehr mit Atomwaffen. Von 1969-80 war er Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts zur Erforschung der Lebensbedingungen der wissenschaftlich-technischen Welt in Starnberg. Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker wurde mit zahlreichen internationalen wissenschaftlichen Preisen sowie dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (1963) ausgezeichnet. 2007 verstarb Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker.
