The prevailing misconceptions about Anne of Austria paint her as politically inept, naïve, lazy, and extravagant. In this study, Oliver Malick reveals that the exact opposite was the case. Her skillful self-presentation as model widow, mother, and regent, and her targeted use of the rhetoric of friendship to foster client loyalty reveal Anne of Austria as a talented strategist and architect of an extensive politics of patronage.
