This book throws new light on the spiritual background, the origins, and the most important characteristics of Islam, as well as on the consequences of these characteristics for the role that it plays in contemporary society and politics. It makes an influential contribution to the current debate on slam. Its author, the Syrian philosopher Nayef Ballouz (19341998), was one of the most significant Arabic thinkers of the late twentieth century.
