In the 16th century, Philipp Melanchthon, the eminent reformer and humanist, was given the honorary title of the »teacher of Germany«(Praeceptor Germaniae). However with the beginning of more recent Melanchthon research it became clear that the honorary title »Praeceptor Germaniae« fell short of doing justice to Melanchthon's true significance for the European countries at that time. For the first time, the articles in this volume document the lasting influence Melanchthon really had on church and imperial policies, confessionalization, the training of theologians and on university and academic life from Iceland to Transylvania, an influence which he exercised through his students and the humanist network in Europe at that time.
