When studying the changes in church and society triggered by the Reformation 500 years ago, one may not ignore the dark side of those events. The papers presented in this volume explore the phenomenon of religiously motivated persecution of Christians in the early modern period from an interdisciplinary and interconfessional perspective. The essays examine, inter alia, the genesis and printing history of books of martyrs, which became popular in the mid-16th century, and also the types and manner of depictions and visualisations contained in them, which helped to strengthen the sense of confessional community or create an identity-establishing confessional culture, respectively.
