Arbeiten zur Kirchengeschichte first began publication in 1925 and can claim to be one of the most tradition-rich historical book series. It presents research on the history of Christian churches and dogmas through the ages but also publishes papers on related disciplines such as archeology, history of art and literary studies. One of the series' leading features is its consistent striving to combine historical-methodical precision with systematic contextualization of each examined topic. In recent years the series has increasingly publishedstudies on themes relating to the history of Christian culture and ideas, viewed within a methodically open perspective on the history of Christianity.

Der Aufsatzband benennt mit Christologie, Kosmographie und Diatribe drei wichtige Themen der "frühen Kirche", d. h. der Reichskirche, wie sie nach Nikaia (Nicäa 325) entstanden ist. Kritisch geprüft werden die in Chalkedon (451) vollzogene Rezeption von zwei christologischen Sichtweisen, ferner die Rezeption Chalkedons vom 6. bis 7. Jh. und die historische Kontinuität zum Monergismus und Monotheletismus. Im Blick auf antike Denkmuster hebt der Autor Probleme theologischer Sprache (von Eunomios v. Kyzikos bis Anastasios Sinaites), die Methode topischer Findung christologischer Axiomatik und das anthropologische Paradigma der hypostatischen Union hervor. In der Kosmographie stellt Kosmas der Indienfahrer (6. Jh.) dem ptolemäischen Weltbild ein biblisches Weltbild antiochenischer Provenienz entgegen. Schließlich werden der Predigtstil der Diatribe, entwickelt aus einer Kommunikationsform der Schule und des Marktes, und das Ende spätantiker Rhetorik bei Augustinus reflektiert.

Karl-Heinz Uthemann vertrat bis zu seinem Eintritt in den Ruhestand im August 2004 das Fach Frühchristliche griechische und lateinische Literatur an der Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam im Fachbereich Klassische Philologie.
