The judge and journalist C. W. A. Hardung (17681821) bitterly upheld the waning legal order of the Holy Roman Empire in the secularized abbeys of Essen and Werden. This book presents for the first time his life and influence on major statesmen of the period. It includes a reprint and commentary on his widely-read Constitutional investigations on the power of the new regents in secularized territories of the Empire.
