The dictionary arranges the central vocabulary of present-day German (approx. 60,000 words) into groups of related terms. The operative criterion is not historical kinship between words but the relative degree of motivatedness perceived to exist between them by normal language users. Thus, under the heading fahren the reader will find words like Fahrer , abfahren , Anfahrt , but not fertig , let alone porös . In doubtful cases, such as erfahren , there are cross-references. The dictionary also gives all the customary information on the words listed, such as inflection, pronunciation, definitions etc.
