Today, we think of the monotheistic religions as causes of violence and intolerance. Yet tolerance of other monotheistic groups was the custom in the Christian and Islamic territories of Eurasia in the Middle Ages. What was the balance between religious distancing and social and cultural interconnection? Recent research has suggested many answers to this question, and they are systematically presented in this volume.
