The urban courtyard and its far-reaching significance for the development of neighborhoods was the topic of the 15th Konferenz zur Schönheit und Lebenfähigkeit der Stadt (Conference on the Beauty and Viability of the City). The division of the city into public and private spaces is a fundamental quality of urban planning because it provides residents with open spaces, gardens, and courtyards on the property, which they can take care of together. This self-organized arrangement strengthens social interaction and promotes democratic behavior in daily negociations with the house community. In lectures and discussions, experts examine social, urban planning, transportation, ecological, and architectural aspects of urban courtyards.

Christoph Mäckler ist Architekt in Frankfurt am Main, emeritierter Professor für Städtebau an der TU Dortmund sowie Direktor des Deutschen Instituts für Stadtbaukunst, das er 2008 gründete. Von 1990 bis 1997 war er Gastprofessor in Neapel, Braunschweig und Hannover und Mitglied der Internationalen Bauakademie Berlin.

Wolfgang Sonne ist seit 2007 Professor für Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur an der TU Dortmund. Er ist Wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Baukunstarchivs NRW sowie stellvertretender Direktor und Mitbegründer des Deutschen Instituts für Stadtbaukunst. Er lehrte u. a. an der ETH Zürich und der University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
