It is only at first glance that we might mistake geology for an unassuming science of the inorganic. A closer look reveals its importance for human self-understanding, concepts of time, and notions of history. The Founding Fathers of historiography and philosophy adopted geological models, terms, and concepts. Thus, geology has had a critical impact on the development of modern historical thought.
