Björn Slenczka reconstructs this rift for the first time on the basis of representative sources and sheds some light on the reasons for it.

The Worms Colloquy of 1557, in which eminent theologians took part, was the last imperial attempt to achieve religious unity in the 16th century. It quickly focused however on the serious conflict between the Protestant delegates concerning the condemnation of false doctrines. This conflict was the reason for the subsequent termination of the colloquy and also for the public rift among the adherents of the Augsburg Confession. In this book, Björn Slenczka reconstructs this rift for the first time on the basis of representative sources and sheds some light on the reasons for it. In doing so, he shows that the explosiveness of this rift led to a downright schism and determines to what extent leading theologians and politicians were responsible for this.

Das Wormser Religionsgespräch von 1557 war der letzte Versuch im 16. Jahrhundert, durch theologische Verhandlungen auf Reichsebene die konfessionelle Spaltung zu überwinden. Hochangesehene Theologen nahmen daran teil: Pflug, Helding und Canisius auf römisch-katholischer, Melanchthon, Brenz und Schnepf auf evangelischer Seite. Alle Aufmerksamkeit galt jedoch bald internen Auseinandersetzungen der evangelischen Teilnehmer um die Verwerfung falscher Lehre. Sie wurden nicht nur zum Anlaß für den späteren Abbruch des Reichsreligionsgesprächs, sondern führten zum öffentlichen Bruch zwischen den Augsburger Konfessionsverwandten. Björn Slenczka unternimmt es, diesen Bruch erstmals gestützt auf eine repräsentative Quellenbasis zu rekonstruieren und ihn aus seinen Voraussetzungen zu erhellen. Dadurch läßt sich die Brisanz des Bruchs als eines regelrechten Schismas erfassen und neu bestimmen, welchen Anteil führende Theologen und politische Akteure daran hatten.
