Is Latin instruction still appropriate in our time? The question is as old as the idea of the Humboldt Gymnasium itself. To this day, Latin is still part of the educational canon in Germany. By examining political decision-making and educational philosophy, this study exposes the German conceptions of society that emerge from the Latin instruction debate.
