The present study contributes to research on the function of proverbs in the Middle Ages. It examines introductions to Latin sermons with an East Central German and Bavarian provenance that begin with German proverbs. These texts, dating from between 1448 and 1518, are made accessible for the first time in this edition. The contexts of their origin as well as their potential audiences are studied and brought into connection with clerical circles.
