Ethen (standardsprachlich: Äthen; veraltet auch: Ethylen, Äthylen) ist ein farbloses, süßlich riechendes Gas. Es ist das einfachste Alken, ein ungesättigter Kohlenwasserstoff mit einer Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Doppelbindung. Für die Petrochemie stellt Ethen die wichtigste Grundchemikalie dar. Außerdem hat es als Phytohormon große Bedeutung. Im Jahr 1795 wurde von vier niederländischen Chemikern die Synthese von 1,2-Dichlorethan aus Ethen und Chlor entdeckt. Da das Produkt als "Öl der holländischen Chemiker" bezeichnet wurde, nannte man Ethen im Französischen "gaz oléfiant" (ölbildendes Gas).
