Bharati Mukherjee, in her fiction, makes a concerted effort to conceptualize the image of the immigrants, who asserts their claim to an American identity by struggling heroically to assimilate themselves successfully in a new cultural landscape. She invariably focuses upon sensitive protagonists who lack a fine sense of cultural identity, and are natural victim of disintegration by racism, sexism and numerous form of social oppression.
