During his almost forty years of British exile, the Italian nationalist Joseph Mazzini was in contact with many of the leading figures of the age, British and foreign - including Mill and Carlyle, the Chartists, and exiles such as Marx, Herzen, and Bakunin. At this time Mazzini also wrote some of his most important works, including his major tome, The Duties of Man. He also closely followed the course of British radicalism while continuing his own program for Italian unification. This work analyses the effect of this exile on his writings and policies and his influence on the intellectual life of the period.

quot;It is indeed a very fine piece of work on a difficult but timely subject and well worth publishing." (Samuel A. Pleasants, Fairleigh Dickinson University, New Jersey) "This book makes a solid contribution to nineteenth-century British studies, and is a pioneering study of Mazzini's relations with British reformers." "It contributes to a deeper understanding of nineteenth-century emigre politics." (Joel H. Wiener, Professor of History, The City University of New York, New York) "Professor Roberts' work, a most readable and incisive analysis of the writings and policies of the revolutionary figure Mazzini, is an important contribution to the history of 19th century thought. Through it, we are presented a most engaging view of the intellectual life of the period. It is highly recommended to students of both British and European history and to all interested in Victorian studies." (Dr. Frances B. Pagano, Ass't. Professor of Social Sciences, New York Institute of Technology, New York) "In my judgment the workmanship is of high quality in both research methods and presentation. Both the British and Italian aspects of Mazzini's life and work in London are presented with understanding. The reader receives new insight into the role played by Mazzini in both countries. Particularly important are the presentations of his relationships with important British literary and philosophical figures of the period." (H.F. Mackenson, Professor Emeritus, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, N.J.)

Contents: This work differs from standard biographies of Mazzini in that it concentrates on the exile and on analysing his writing during that period on such issues as nationalism, communism, utilitarianism, Chartism, the suffrage, the workers' movements, and positivism.
