Excerpt from Sidelights on Scottish History

From a very early period a protecting Wall ran é/ round that portion lying near the Castle, Whose northern, western and southern sides were inac cessible by reason of its position on a rocky spur. The city wall was further extended during the reign of James II. So as to include the additions made to the primitive town Up to that period. This wall seems to have enclosed Castle Hill, Lawnmarket, High Street, and their respective closes. After the dire disaster of F lodden Field, it appeared desirable to bring within the fortified area the houses built dur ing the previous century. This was accordingly done, but so hurriedly was it accomplished that the result was not an entire success, regarded as masons' work.
