Dr. Michael Adams practiced dentistry for nine years, during which time he thought he had developed a pretty good idea of how the public regarded health care professionals, assuming they viewed them with a "healthy" mixture of criticism and respect. Then he suddenly found himself on the opposite side of the service provision desk when he was hospitalized for a short time in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, Canada. Dr. Adams gained a whole new appreciation for what it feels like to be on the receiving end of health care services. More importantly, he observed the unrealistic standards and expectations people impose on health care professionals and the high price he and his fellow dentists, doctors, and surgeons are paying in terms of their mental health. He wrote this book with the hope of injecting some realism into the doctor/patient relationship for the sake of those providing care as well as those receiving treatment.

Americans and Canadians hold health care providers in the highest regard. As such, people tend to elevate health care professionals on a high pedestal which can create impractical moral standards on their dentist, doctor, or surgeon. This puts immense pressure on those who work within the health care profession not only to meet these standards but also to hide their struggles when they fail. The result is high rates of suicide and depression amongst health care professionals, because the cost of maintaining the provision of care is just too great and also altruistically rewarding.

Dr. Michael Adams knows this struggle all too well. After practicing dentistry for nine years, he found himself hospitalized for mental health issues. That was the wakeup call he needed to re-examine his own life as well as how these unrealistic expectations are wreaking havoc on his peers. Not only is it hurting health care providers, it is also affecting the level of care patients receive.

In this short book, Dr. Adams strives to help both practitioners and patients gain a better understanding of the pressures health care providers face and how these challenges can be mitigated through proper training, peer support, and a recalibration of the doctor/patient relationship.
