John watson (1685? A Scotch man, came to the colonies in 1715 and settled at Perth Amboy, then the capital of New Jer sey. After his first visit he returned to Europe and brought back to his adopted country a number of paintings, which thus formed the first collection of pictures in this country. His own work consisted of portraits and ideal heads of kings and heroes, but Dunlap, writing in 1834, said even then, None of the pictures brought into this country or painted by him can now be found.
