INTRODUCTION
This book focuses on how to build a career in politics generally (including local government), with a more in-depth view of the Capitol Hill experience. Many of the lessons learned on Capitol Hill are easily transferable to other opportunities in local government. Throughout this book we use “the Hill” both literally and figuratively. Our experience as staffers was on Capitol Hill, even though Jaime went on to be chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party. The lessons and pieces of advice we provide you stem from our tenure on the Hill. However, we also know a lot of friends and colleagues who started their careers as staffers in state legislatures and the several Hill committees. In speaking with them, we learned that our advice for the ambitious staffer applies to the state and local level as well. This book is meant to be a guide for anyone who wants to get a start in politics. “The Hill” can be your state legislature, city council, or the real one in Washington, DC.
We also provide firsthand accounts from our old friends and colleagues, whose experiences as staffers at various positions in federal, state, and committee positions are valuable to you. In some cases, these accounts support a lesson or point we make about political work; in others, they provide an entirely different perspective. There is no one way to climb the Hill. But we hope that you will notice a constant thread throughout their stories. Namely, that they all got into politics for the right reasons, to make a difference, and that is why they all achieved great success in their careers.
Above all, we hope to provide you with a useful guide. We’re not here to score any points, so if it’s dirt you want, we’re sorry to disappoint. We’re also not here to tell you how to cut corners or “get rich quick.” If that’s your aim, you don’t belong in politics. Since you’ve picked up this book, you are probably trying to decide if you want to work in Congress or have a role in government, or maybe you have already decided that’s your path. We applaud you for that decision, and now we will teach you how you can achieve your dream.
