Anne Carter Lee, an architectural historian and preservation activist, assembled a team for this volume that includes contributors from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the National Trust, the Historic American Buildings Survey, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Art Department of Washington and Lee University.

This second of two volumes devoted to the architecture of Virginia, this encompasses five regions, comprising 55 counties and 20 of the state's independent cities. More than 1,250 building entries document the commonwealth's history from prehistory to early settlement, through the Civil War, Reconstruction, Massive Resistance, and the civil rights movement, to the present day, surveying a range of building types and styles from log cabins to tobacco plantation houses.
