Advances in surgery have reached an exponential scale, and the changes of the last decade of the twentieth century have become common pr- tice. Imagination and foresight are the more visible standards for prof- sional appointments than ever before. The fiber optic cable, computer, and Internet are the workhorses of this sea-change, and surgeons must master all of them to remain intellectually and technically up-to-date. This text will focus specifically on the internet needs of surgeons, educating them on how to use the internet in their day-to-day practice and life. Topics such as the history of the internet, terminology, hardware and software, search engines, e-mail, clinical trials, literature searches, telemedicine, patient information, and webpages will be covered in depth. A centerpiece of the book will be the extensive lists of annotated surgery-specific internet sites, as well as general health-related internet sites and department of surgery sites.
