Excerpt from Annual Reports of the Town Officers of the Town of Canterbury: Comprising Those of the Selectmen, Treasurer, Town Clerk, Tax Collector, School Board, Library Trustees and Librarian, Trustees of the Trust Funds, for the Year Ending January 31, 1940

In addition to the regular activities of the Town there are still a few things which have been done with your tax money of which you all may not be aware.

Besides keeping the roads in good shape for comfortable driving - an-di if you ever drive over some of the back roads of the adjoining towns you will think that our roads are really good - rocks were removed from many ditches and the roads widened so as to make it possible to use the snow plow on them, without damage to the plow.

In repairing some of the ood damage of a year ago the road to the residence of O. E. Wells was rebuilt, and on this same account the road from the Concord line to the residence of Joseph Greenwood was widened and gravelled, and the brook near the Gleason place was dredged out and the road along there dressed for a considerable distance.

On the State Aid Construction work one mile and a half of the project commenced in 'l938, and left uncompleted on account of the hurricane, was completed.

In addition to this the following projects were completed the road on the Intervals was dressed for a mile and a half the road to the residence of Charles Rancour was widened and put in good condition; two hills between the Shakers and the Rocky Pond road, which have been impassable i-n the spring, have 'been put in good condition; the Cogswell Nelson road has been widened; the Wilson road was widen ed and the Pope road graveled; near the Clough place the road was ditched and banked to turn the water from a spring out of the road; a number of old roads-had to be put in passable condition on account of extensive lumbering.
