Psalm 96

This work has similar driving rhythms to the well-known setting of the same words by Pitoni in many places, but there are new and exciting twists. The contrast between 3/8 and 2/4 time is particularly good. Although it would need a great deal of effort to obtain precision with the constantly changing metre it will be worth the trouble . . . I really enjoyed it and can recommend it strongly.

Autorentext
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras.

Zusammenfassung
An unusual and dramatic anthem for SATB choir (with divisions) unaccompanied The English verses, starting 'O sing unto the Lord a new song', are framed by the Latin first line 'Cantate Domino canticum novum'. The words and plainsong melody of the Veni Creator Spiritus make an unexpected and effective entry towards the end of the anthem. It is also included in Rutter's Psalmfest.
