Excerpt: The Irish Rovers is a Canadian Irish folk group created in 1963 and named after the traditional song "The Irish Rover". The group is best known for their recording of Shel Silverstein's "The Unicorn" in 1967. The primary voices heard in the group's early songs were Will Millar (tenor) and Jimmy Ferguson (baritone). All of the band members are from Ireland. Founding member George Millar is from Ballymena along with his brothers, Ian and Will as well as their cousin Joe, long-time group member Wilcil McDowell is from Larne, Sean O'Driscoll from Cork, with John Reynolds and percussionist Fred Graham both from Belfast rounding out the lineup. The Irish Rovers have represented Canada in no less than five World Expos, and throughout the years, have continued to tour worldwide. In 2010, the band celebrated their 45 years of sharing their music with the world by producing a CD and a DVD/television special filmed entirely in Northern Ireland. George Millar and Jimmy Ferguson performed as a duo together in Toronto as The Irish Rovers, performing mostly Irish folk songs until Millar's cousin, Joe, who played button-key accordion and harmonica and sang traditional ballads, immigrated to Canada the following year and was recruited as he soon as he stepped off the plane. George's older brother, Will, was already singing children's songs in Phil's Pancake House in Calgary, so the trio then went to recruit him as well, who then introduced the group to producer Les Weinstein, who arranged their first television appearances and would become their full time manager. The Irish Rovers became regulars at the Depression, a folk club that also contributed to the start of Joni Mitchell's career.
