It is important to note that the starting friction and the running friction, in any given case. Are affected in oppo site manner by a difference of temperature. The higher the temperature the higher the starting friction and the lower the running friction. It is for this reason that the curves cross each other at or near their critical velocity points, in Fig. 7. This peculiar effect of temperature is probably related to the viscosity of the lubricant and the thickness of the lubricating film.

The analysis of these curves is simplified, if we bear in mind the observation, already noted, that lubricated journal friction is really a composite quantity, made up partly of sliding friction and partly of uid friction.
