Excerpt from Comparative Surgery: With Illustrative Cases

It is the purpose of this communication to report some of [179] the cases which indicate, it is hoped, a new development in our present plan of teaching operative surgery; for latterly as the work has been conducted, it has necessarily subjected vagrant animals to the risks and discomforts attending more or less serious surgical procedures carried out for the relief of merely hypothetical maladies.

Four years ago an effort was made in our medical school - and so far as I know for the first time in any school - to change in a radical way those methods of conducting an Opera tive course, which, for the past generation, have been widely adopted and generally regarded as most practicable by the surgical teachers in the leading medical institutions.
