Excerpt from The Purgatorio of Dante Alighieri: Rendered Into Spenserian English

More than 600 years ago a boy of nine met a girl about a year younger in a house in Flor ence. The girl took little notice of the boy, indeed throughout her life there is no indication that he made the slightest impression upon her mind, but he never forgot that first meeting and from it sprang the grandest love recorded in the world's history. Ten years afterwards, as he himself relates, she openly mocked him in the presence of her com panions, and he took the noblest revenge it is possible to take for a young woman's contumely by representing it \as repeated in the Earthly Paradise itself in the presence of Apostles and Evangelists and the blessed company of the Heavenly Pageant. The boy was Dante Alighieri, born in 1265 of a noble but impoverished family of Florence, and the girl Beatrice Portinari, who married Simone de' Bardi, and died in 1290. Of all the world's heroines there is probably none more shadowy than Beatrice: indeed many have held that she never existed at all in the esh, yet to.
