FILMED BOOKS AND PLAYS A LIST OF BOOKS AND PLAYS FROM WHICH FILMS HAVE BEEN MADE, 1928 1949. By A. G. S. ENSER, F. L. A., F. R. S. A. LONDON GRAFTON GO. 1951 and. Printed in Great Britain by O. Tinting Co. JLtd., Liverpool, London, and Preset To LESLIE M. REES, F. L. A. PREFACE SCOPE This list of films made from books or plays covers films produced between 1928 and 1949. The date 1928 was chosen because from that year onwards most films were talking pictures. Practically all the films listed are either British or American in origin. It is not claimed that the list is completely exhaustive and I should be pleased to be informed of any omissions. During research it has been found that the title of a film shown in Great Britain often changes when presented in the United States, and vice versa, e. g., Norman Collins London Belongs to Me was shown here under that title, but in America as Dulcimer Street, whilst Compton Mackenzies Whisky Galore, shown here under that title was called Tight Little Island in the United States. However, such changes of title have not been included in this book. The change of title index is concerned with the film title of a book differing from the book title on presentation in this country. ARRANGEMENT There are three indexes, namely a Film title index. 6 Author index. c Change of original title index. The articles The, A or An are placed at the end of the title instead of at the beginning, and are ignored in alphabetical arrange ment. The Film title index is arranged alphabetically under the title of the film, underneath is shown the name of the maker or distributing company usually in abbreviation and the year. Opposite is shown the name of the author of thebook from which the film was made, and underneath, the name of the publisher. Where another title, in italics, follows the name of the author, this signifies that the film company changed the title of the book from the original shown in italics to that printed opposite. Where P is found, this signifies that the book is in play form. The Author index is arranged alphabetically under the names of authors with further alphabetical arrangement under each author of his works which have been filmed. Underneath the title of the work filmed is shown the name of the publisher. Opposite is shown the name of the maker or distributing company. Should a title in italics follow, this signifies the title under which the film was presented. It will be noted that in this author index liberty has been taken to use vii an authors pseudonym, where employed, in preference to his real name. Reference, in such cases, is made from the real name to the pseudonym used, e. g., STURE-VASA, Mary. See OHARA, Mary, pseud. In the case of dual authors, the author entry is made under the name of the first mentioned on the title page. The second authors name is also listed but reference given to the name of the first author, under which the entry will be found, e. g., SIMON, S. J. pseud. See BRAHMS, C. jt. author. The Change of original title index is an alphabetical arrangement of original book titles differing from their film titles. Underneath the original book title is found the name of the author. Opposite is found the title of the film, with underneath the name of the maker or distributing company and the year. HOW TO USE THE INDEXES If the name of the film is known but not the name of the author of the book, referto the film title index. Ignore any article The, A or An. If the name of the author is known but not that of the book or film, refer to the author index where under the authors name will be found, in alphabetical arrangement, the titles of his works which have been filmed. If it is desired to know which works of a particular author have been filmed, refer to the author index. If the original title of the book is known but not that given to the film, nor the authors name, refer to the change of original title index...
