The Regional Organizations of the Asia Pacific

This collection examines change within the major regional organisations of the Asia Pacific: The Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). It has two simultaneous foci: the nature of institutional change in regional organisations, and the process of regionalism in the Asia Pacific. It combines the views of both officials and practitioners, providing new insights into both its major questions.

On the one hand, the Asia Pacific is a region of extensive and quite startling change - first of startling economic growth and development, then of precipitate crash and uncertainty. On the other hand, the region has evolved a distinctive approach to regionalism and regional organisation: initially it had no compelling 'regional architecture'; and when regional organisations developed, they did so along distinctly different lines to regionalism in other parts of the world. The essays in this volume look forward to the future of the region and its institutions after the catastrophe of the Asian economic crisis by looking back at the processes of institutional change manifested by each of the Asia Pacific's main regional organisations: the Asian Development Bank (ABD), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). The conclusions offered by the contributors are important in thinking about the future shape of the regional order in the Asia Pacific.
