Beschreibung

This debut collection of stories-featuring a talk-show host and her talking hand, a women's activity group that writes to prisoners, and a poncho-making nudist-is as unique as it is compelling. Set in their own melodramatic worlds, the stories take inspiration from Old Hollywood, Gothic novels, art-world gossip, and maybe a Lifetime movie or two. Balzer's observations are as sharp as Flaubert's, and his characters are drawn with the complexity of George Saunders (and the wit of George Sanders). Beautifully illustrated throughout, Contrivances proves that tragedy is comedy when you play with it long enough.

Autorentext

David Balzer was born a fraternal twin in a Mennonite family in north Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He studied English literature at the University of Manitoba and, then, at McGill University in Montreal. He currently resides in Toronto, where he makes a living as a critic, editor, and teacher. He is a two-time National Magazine Award-winner and a co-founder of the Toronto Alliance of Art Critics.

Klappentext

This debut collection of stories about talk show hosts and their talking hands, a single women's activity group who write to prisoners, and a ukulele player lost at sea is storytelling that's as unique as it is compelling. The observations are as sharp as Flaubert's, and the characters are as complex as those created by George Saunders (and as witty as George Sanders.) Contrivances proves that drama is comedy when you play it long enough.
