The handbook presents the international progressive education or "éducation nouvelle" as a worldwide movement. It includes descriptions of the development of progressive education in and outside Europe and the United States, the centres of international progressive education, selected models of progressive education and a discussion of the influence of progressive education on educational policies and reforms in different countries.

The Editors: Hermann Röhrs, emeritus professor of education at the University of Heidelberg, Germany; he is honorary president of the World Education Fellowship (German speaking section, honorary member of the Comparative Education Society in Europe) and honorary doctor of the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
Volker Lenhart is professor of education at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
Both editors have their focus of work in international and comparative education.
