Sei Urgroßvater Adlai Ewing Stevenson I. war Vizepräsident der Vereinigten Staaten, sein gleichnamiger Vater Adlai Ewing Stevenson II. war Gouverneur von Illinois, mehrfacher Präsidentschaftskandidat der Demokratischen Partei und UN-Botschafter der USA während der Kubakrise.
